Trapped Women project The Hague by Niek Kramer
The Hague has struggled for years for what to do with the property on the former Poeldijkstraat, the notorious red light district in The Hague on the edge of the Schilderswijk. The Poeldijkstraat itself no longer exists. The houses were demolished, and neat new residential streets were erected in its place bearing a new name: the Wolterbeekstraat. All that remains of the Poeldijkstraat is a boarded up building at the corner of Hoefkade.
Project idea:
A glimpse of the inside. Pictures represent the loaded history of the neighborhood, while also emphasizing the beauty of the building once the boards are removed.

"The purpose of art is not to display the surface of things, but the inside ... that is the real reality." (Aristotle).

We all consist of several layers. The outer layer does not show all what this is hidden. Looking through several layers is an art on it's own, where time and distance are two important variables.

In this project, that is bundled in a book, Lotte Bruning used these variables and turned the outer layers of the models transparent. You can look through the layers, beyond the outer shell and therefore display the underlying characteristics that make people look so wonderful.

Rocket Garage Amsterdam was pleased to participate in this inspiring project.

Celia Rowlson-Hall Receives A Bessie Award

Celia Rowlson-Hall has received a Bessie Award for performing in Faye Driscoll's "837 Venice Boulevard. Here is an excerpt from another review by Deborah Jowitt:

"The 60-minute piece ends with a long disintegrating sequence in which the two of them carry Rowlson-Hall through an extended ballet “solo.” It’s both funny and excruciating. Rowlson-Hall is slender and long-limbed, and this is an aspiring dancer’s fantasy-nightmare. Her friends gamely hoist her and twist her, lift her legs high, make her soar. She feels (and is) beautiful. Most of the time. But this is exhausting for all three. At one point, they shove her up one of the two additional poles, and park her there, clinging like a monkey, while they take a panting time-out. Eventually, the positions they maul her into are blurred beyond recognition, and you ache for all three performers."

"In the most arresting and disturbing sequence, the three perform in unison what might be a dance-school recital number wearing gold and red capes. Out of nowhere, Rowlson-Hall calls a halt—no, howls at them to stop; they’re screwing up the routine. She then launches into a hair-raising monologue, morphing from what might be an angry chum to a disappointed teacher or ranting parent into a hatred-spewing, homophobic, racist bigot. What she snarls at them for what seems a very long time is so shockingly over the top and eventually so absurd that you laugh even as you cringe. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Rowlson-Hall’s performance is how she begins to crumple—her voice breaking, her eyes filling—so that this time when she says, “You might as well die,” she’s talking about herself, and the others take her hands and make them stroke her into calmness."

Hey Kids!
Great news! Your Rocket Garage Comic has finally arrived! But hold on to it, for it's sure to be a collectable in no time!

This season, we decided to have some fun and employed the imagination of 11 year old Elena LaBreche to come up with an idea for the SS11 promo package. "Show Stopper" is the result of her efforts, paired with the somewhat daunting task of using (mostly) in-house photos of the talent to go along with her story line (a rule we agreed upon as part of this challenge).

We printed up 100 copies, and they are already gone. But, we wanted
to make sure there was a copy online as well. We realize you may not
be able to get to it right away, but when time allows it will be there
for you. That's the great thing about comics.

We are saddened to learn of the detah of Corinne Day. Corinne was a model maker, pure and simple. As a manager, you knew what you were going to get with Corinne, the same way you know what you're going to get from Terry, or Mario, or Steven. There was an elegance in her English brand of "grottiness", and while others went willingly into the throw away camera style du jour of the '90's, Corinne kept one foot in the pool of stylistic moderation. She was a great one, and another cowboy gone too soon.

Model As Performance Artist

The other night, CK went all performance art on us at a fundraiser for the world stage premier of Edward Scissorhands. Liam Alexander was selected to create a new work of art for the event. working with the theme of transformation, Liam created an installation piece live in the gallery, the model seated inside a blank canvas while a world was painted around her using light and projected images. As each piece was complete, the final image was displayed in the gallery on video screens. Clothing by Ruffian.

Apparently, Coco Young thinks it's perfectly fine to lead James Lim over at New York Magazine's "The Cut" blog to believe that she hasn't had representation until she decided to head to Wilhelmina. What's even more interesting is the idea that a blog attached to a respected magazine wouldn't do their homework, even a little. Tsk tsk. Shame on both of you.

While it may be true that we are all entitled to our opinions, we are not entitled to print revisionist history as fact. A simple Google search would be all that it took. Go ahead...try it yourself. For more than two years leading up to her Marc Jacobs moment, Rocket Garage turned Coco Young out the old fashioned way...with hard work, not cheap press. And you can take that all the way to the bank!
